Delivering a Safer, More Connected SW 10th Street

The SW 10th Street Connector Project is a coordinated transportation improvement effort rebuilding SW 10th Street and advancing critical safety and operational improvements along the corridor, Interstate 95, and key regional interchanges across South Florida.

Designed through a vision that prioritizes safety, time, and quality of life, the SW 10th Street Connector project addresses long-standing safety and congestion challenges by separating local and regional traffic along the SW 10th Street corridor — creating dedicated Connector lanes for regional travel and a reconstructed local SW 10th Street with a shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists, better serving surrounding neighborhoods and businesses.

The project includes significant upgrades to the S.R. 9/I-95 interchanges at SW 10th Street and S.R. 810/Hillsboro Boulevard, reconstruction of the NW 48th Street bridge, and improvements to the I-95 Express Lanes system to support more reliable regional travel.

These improvements are being delivered as part of the Moving Florida Forward initiative, advancing infrastructure investments that support safety, system reliability, and long-term transportation performance across South Florida.

FDOT Compass

How the project aligns with FDOT’s Compass

FDOT Compass

The FDOT compass emphasizes the significance of having a clear direction in the transportation sector. It sets the direction and ensures alignment with FDOT’s goals of meeting transportation needs now and in the future. Click each pillar to see how the SW 10th Street Connector supports these goals.

Communities

The SW 10th Street Connector is rooted in extensive community engagement. FDOT has incorporated feedback from public workshops, hearings, and stakeholder meetings into the design process. Key community-driven design decisions that help preserve the quality of life for surrounding neighborhoods include landscaped green spaces, decorative noise barrier walls and other structural aesthetic enhancements, and the 12’ wide shared-use path.

Safety

The SW 10th Street corridor will be reconfigured to separate local and regional traffic, significantly reducing congestion and conflict points, and thus enhancing overall safety for all motorists. Additional safety improvements include enhanced lighting, lower speed limits (35 mph on local lanes), and the inclusion of a 12-foot-wide shared-use path for cyclists and pedestrians throughout the full project limits.

Resiliency

The project includes features such as improved drainage systems and elevated roadway structures to reduce flooding impacts, including the reconstruction of the NW 48th Street Bridge and six additional bridges to strengthen the corridor's long-term resilience. Material choices and construction techniques will also be selected to enhance durability, ensuring the corridor remains functional and safe during extreme weather events, including hurricanes and heavy rain.

Supply Chain

The SW 10th Street Connector will fill a gap in South Florida’s major highway network, creating a direct connection between I-95 and the Sawgrass Expressway. This link will enhance freight mobility and reliability for major distributors operating in Broward County that rely on efficient logistics. The reduced congestion and improved travel times for freight users will directly benefit supply chain efficiency, supporting the regional economy and aligning with FDOT’s goals.

Technology

The SW 10th Street Connector program includes intelligent infrastructure features such as cutting-edge Smart Roads technology. The proposed Smart Roads improvements will help motorists make informed decisions on the most efficient routes through and around the construction work zone and advise motorists of congestion and major construction activities and traffic incidents in advance.

Workforce Development

The construction and long-term management of the SW 10th Street Connector project will generate local job opportunities during construction and support workforce development within the south Florida transportation sector. FDOT’s partnerships with local contractors and training programs certify that workers are equipped with the skills needed for modern infrastructure projects. This focus strengthens the regional economy and supports skilled labor pipelines in South Florida.
